Dive Master 1's Log : Spratly Islands-Layang Layang May 30- June 5, 200 Air temperature : 28-30°C Water temperature : 27-28°C Visibility : 50-60 ft.
This week we had Khun Hui and her group from Bangkok, Thailand. The group was great and had an interesting cast of characters. Even with the weather not cooperating, they did not let it bother them. They kept on diving and kept on smiling! We started of the week with the 2 wrecks : Cement and Blue Water. We met our usual marine friends at the dive location and there was plenty to see! Good visibility with a lot of Frog fish, large school of Jacks, black snapper, barracuda and bat fish. We had great macro opportunities with flatworms, leaffish and nudibranch. At Layang Layang and Spratly Islands, we had a brief sighting of Hammerhead sharks (8) and devil rays (20+)!This week was filled with all our normal critters! It included gray reef sharks, black tip sharks, napoleon wrasse, giant clams, large schools of jacks. The weather this week was not friendly. There was getting around with some rain, wind and swells. We had weather system colliding with developing systems that gave us a difficult time finding place to dive. We did our best to find the best diving for our guests. We were able to get a few great dives at Dallas Reefs, The Point and some dive sites around Layang Layang. Thank you Khun Hui and her friends for a fun filled week of diving and we look forward to see you all again. *********************************************************** Dive Master 1's Log : Spratly Islands - Layang Layang Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 Entry by : Dive Master 1 crew Air temperature : 85-90°F Water temperature : 82-84°F (27°C) Visibility : 70-90 ft. up to (30m.) This week we had guests from Bangkok, Thailand and Singapore, Sabene and her friends, it was great to see them and dive with them again! Another awesome week on Dive Master 1 at Layang Layang and Spratly Islands. Sunday, we started of the trip with a full day of diving around Labuan Wreck divesites. We did our first dive at Blue Water Wreck and Dive 2 at Cement Wreck, all enjoyed with the very best visibility and no current at alll. Our dive at Cement Wreck was fantastic with beautiful wreck, frog fish, nudibranchs, tuna, In the late afternoon, we cruised 16 hours to Layang Layang along with the school of Dolphins. Monday morning at 7.30, our dive 3 at The Point, Layang Layang we found a big giant triggerfish on open sand areas with scattered coral patches. It is not advisable to approach the male guarding its nest, the fish will attach at once. We really enjoyed with a big manta ray spent at least 20 minutes doing flips turns and fly by. Next up was Shark Cave, plenty of action, giant school of Tuna, 2 sleeping sharks and another 3 swim by with the thousands of reef fish. Tuesday, after the first dive of the day at The Point, we cruised to Dallas Reef. We drifted along the wall of Dallas Reef with the grey reef sharks and school of barracudas there, which are covered with wonderful soft coral, giant seafan and millions of colourful tropical fish. We moved to Marivalles “Emerald” where our dive was awesome, school of Jack, giant tunas and end up the day with dust dive. When we were up to the surface, the sun was out with only a few shower. Wednesday yet another morning of flat calm seas and blue sky welcome us to dive here. The first 2 dives were at Marivalles again but the morning light at 7 o’clock made us stunt when we saw the huge seafan garden, very beautiful!! school of Jacks and plenty of reef critter keep everyone happy. We went looking for the Hammerheads, a 20 minutes drift in the blue but did not see any of them however we were excited to see the school of Devil Ray 40+ swim by and enjoyed a couple of grey reef sharks and schools of reef fish. This was the best dive we have ever made! Our Dive Master 1 moved back to Layang Layang and did the afternoon dive at Crack Reef where we had the very very nice visibility, the photographer were happy with tiny critter like Pygmy seahorses. Thursday, The Point again, what a dive it was!! our first school of Hammerhead sharks at 37.5 m and 5 minutes later 2 big grey reef sharks came by. Yes! what a dive! Farewell dive at The Point, our last dive was great with the tide coming in, good visibility and we hope to have another chance to say goodbye to the Hammerhead sharks but not any come however we still enjoyed with the big school of tunas and turtles. It was the moment to remember, very nice. Our Dive Master 1 cruised back to Labuan allowed the gear to dry and dinner on board was enjoyed by all. Thank everyone for a great week of diving on Dive Master 1 and hope to see you all sooner later than later. ***********************************************************

Weather : This week was a nice combination of sunshine and clouds with some rain. Surface condition were a little to rough to make it to Dallas Reefs. We had to deal with some wind. The water temperature is around 26-28'c degree. The visibility was not as brilliant but still had 60-80 ft. The currents were mild this week. This week we had a fun group of 21 divers!! Tethys group from Czeck Republic and Slovak Republic. Thomas was the group leader. There was plenty of action at The Point with hammer head sharks (40+), gray reef sharks, and school of barracuda, jacks and black snappers! The wall of fish massive! giant clams, soft corals and sea fans. The soft coral were polific this week and swelled up on the walls as we drifted past them. It was spectacular! The Cement is a fantastic wreck. The visibility was pretty good which is rare. We saw a couple of juvenile batfish following us around the wreck. The ship was still very impressive, it is completely covered with coral. The guests were amazed at the amount of marine life and the diversity! We had the great dives. Outstanding week for all the divers and we hope to see them all again. Dive Master 1 crew ***********************************************

Hello from Labuan, Malaysia, where I am preparing our M.Y. Dive Master 1 for the 1st Spratly Islands Labuan-Layang Layang Trip during April 8-16.
Along the way Dive Master 1 cruised from Phuket to Labuan , the weather was great this week. We had plenty of sun and friendly breeze. The water was very nice and calm. It was a spectacular week of journey.
The Spratly’s are located 300 km. off the coast of Borneo. Few people knew of these treasures rising from the deep and less than 1% of the reefs and atolls have been explored. No doubt that our M.Y. Dive Master 1 liveaboard is the only one and most productive way to experience the Spratly Islands best dive sites.
Most dive sites follow a similar profiles with the reef top starting at 5 to 10 metres and sloping steeply down. Gorgonian forests, bushes of black coral and whip corals share the seascape with small marine reef fishes. The school of hammerhead sharks swim close to the reef, cruising off the wall in the open water.
M.Y. Dive Master 1 will be proud to present you with a once in a life time where you can appreciate everything in such a pristine water.
